this world, he gave Dharma Talks to teach and transform living beings. However, only worldly people could understand the connection of cause with effect (that is, good and bad actions with their corresponding rewards and retributions), the merits of abstaining from killing and the merits of releasing lives. In the sutra of the Most Supreme King of Golden Light Illumination, there was a story of kindness and compassion which described how, by carrying bags of water, elephants helped to relieve the sufferings of other living beings.
Long ago, in ancient India, there was a virtuous man who was the son of Liu-shui The Elder. He was very kind by nature. One day, while he was out traveling, he came upon a big pond beside a hill. The pond had nearly dried up because of the great summer heat and a shortage of rainfall for months. In the pond there were thousands and millions of fish, prawns and other living beings. If the pond dried up further, the living beings in it would surely die.
After seeing the pitiful condition, the Elder’s son quickly returned to see the king to seek his help. He wanted to borrow twenty elephants to carry water to the pond to save the creatures in it. The king was also a Buddhist who had taken refuge with the Triple Gem. On hearing the suggestion, he kindly granted permission to use his elephants. The Elder’s son then went together with his two sons to borrow leather bags from a wine merchant. These large bags were normally used to keep wine. The were filled with water instead and were carried by the elephants to the pond.
The water was then poured into the pond. After the elephants had made several trips, the pond was filled up and the lives of the living beings in it were saved. When the Elder’s son saw the creatures swimming happily in the pond, he was extremely joyful. He then taught them the Dharma of suffering, emptiness and impermanence. Later, when these fish, prawns, and other creatures passed away, they attained a rebirth in the Heavens. The attainment of such rewards was because they had managed to “listen”, with their senses, to the Buddha Dharma as taught to them by the Elder’s son.
